The BAC’s Head of Athlete Support, Samantha Little, was last week recognised for her exceptional work by UK Sport, with a nomination for their ‘Spirit of High Performance’ award.
The new award – one of a series presented by UK Sport as part of their annual PLx conference – recognises sports, members of staff, athletes or teams that have ‘risen to the challenge in a way that embodies the spirit of high performance’.
Sam was shortlisted alongside Paralympic rowing champion Lauren Rowles, and eventual winner, the recently retired Chair of British Shooting, John Harris.
Sam’s recognition comes at a time when the BAC continues to see an enormous growth in the number of athletes seeking its services. Sam leads the team which lends support to these athletes on a wide range of issues, including mental health, safeguarding concerns, selection appeals and dispute resolution.
“I was very grateful and extremely proud of the nomination; however I would not have the courage and the confidence to do what I do without the backing of the fantastic team at the BAC.
“Our organisation has evolved hugely in recent times, and our services have become increasingly utilised and valued by our membership – around 1,400 athletes who are part of the world-class programmes of 40 sports.
“Our commitment to them has remained consistent – we are here to support, represent and empower Great Britain’s elite athletes, and we are delighted as a team to have received such recognition for this crucial work.”
Mahdi Choudhury, BAC Chief Executive, added:
“Everyone at the BAC was absolutely delighted to see Sam’s work recognised in this way; it’s an honour of which she’s extremely deserving.
“Sam typifies the BAC’s desire and commitment to truly make a difference to sport in this country. Her work alongside athletes and partner organisations is crucial, and as this nomination shows, is highly valued by those across the high-performance system.
“The BAC has continued to flourish and grow its influence over what has been a challenging year for many reasons, and I’m extremely proud of our entire team, who have continued to provide a valuable and high-quality service to our athlete membership.”
